8 bit emulator for Mac

Have you ever wished you could play all the those classic video games on your Mac? VICE allows you to do so by executing programs that run on old 8-bit computers.

The current version emulates the C64, the C64DTV, the C128, the VIC20, almost all PET models, the PLUS4 and the CBM-II. For Commodore 64 fans, this opens up a whole new world of gaming that you'd probably forgotten such as Brian Jack's Superstar Challenge and Winter Olympics.

VICE comes bundled with a few classics in fact, such as Winter Games and The Great Giana Sisters, although it would be nice to have had a few more since they're not exactly large files. VICE even emulates the old Commodore workbench and the floppy drive to give you an incredibly authentic experience in terms of graphics and sound.

VICE will certainly provide a blast from the past for anyone that had a Commodore 64, PET or VIC20.

PROS

  • Realistic emulation
  • Lightweight

CONS

  • Can be tricky to work out how to load games

    This version is definitely broken..
Command Window instantly closes when an emulator is launched, rendering the program unusable.
Cons: Command window needs to stay open
    Doesn't work
